For several years Canolfan Gerdd William Mathias has successfully organised music festivals which focus on a particular instrument and feature world class artists.

Our festivals aim to engage with the local community and attract participants from all over the UK and abroad.

Wales Harp Festival

The Wales Harp Festival takes place annually and is directed by internationally renowned harpist Elinor Bennett. The Festival is located within the town of Caernarfon and includes tuition, lectures, workshops and performances. The harp tuition is suitable for harpists of all ages and abilities.

The next Wales Harp Festival will take place in April 2019 – more details coming soon. 

Every four years the larger scale Wales International Harp Festival is held. The week attracts harpists from over 20 countries and includes competitions, concerts, masterclasses, workshops and community programme.

WAles International Piano Festival

The Wales International Piano Festival was held between 29th April – 2nd May 2016 in Galeri Caernarfon. Under the directorship of international concert pianist Iwan Llewelyn-Jones, the festival presented a programme of activities that focus on three specific areas : 

  • Public Concerts / performance events
  • Competitive events
  • Masterclasses / workshops / public lectures and seminars

Following four days of competitions, concerts and workshops the Wales International Piano Festival came to a close on a high note on Monday evening (2nd May) with Belgian pianist Yulia Vershinina being named the winner of the Senior Piano Solo Competition. Yulia who studies at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester was awarded the main prize of £2,000 donated by Roberts of Port Dinorwic. 

Hungarian Domonkos Csabay was the winner of the competition for piano accompanists. The prize was £1250 donated by the Sickle Foundation. Domonkos is currently studying at the Birmingham Conservatoire.

17 year old Callum McLachlan from Stockport who is a student at Chetham’s School of Music won the Junior Piano Solo Competition 1st prize of £700 supported by piano tutors of the Canolfan Gerdd William Mathias Music Centre. 

The festival organised by Canolfan Gerdd William Mathias Music Centre and directed by pianist Iwan Llewelyn-Jones was held in Galeri, Caernarfon from 29 April – 2 May.

The Piano Festival is normally held every four years with the next festival due to take place in 2020.



Guitars@Galeri is an event Directed by Neil Browning that bring guitarists of all interests together for a weekend of tutorials, workshops and performances. Participants receive tuition from the appropriate course tutors in the area of their choice (electric, acoustic, classical, bass) as well as having the opportunity to explore new topics and genres in mix’n’match workshops in areas such as electric effects and blues slide.

Tutors and performers are invited from all over the UK to provide opportunities to local budding guitarists. Past tutors have included Gary Ryan, John Wheatcroft, Andy Mackenzie, Stewart Ryan and Colin Tommis.

The event is suitable for adults and young people over the age of 15 and was first held in February 2013. The second Guitars@Galeri was held in May 2015.
